Improve your chances

  • Have sex every 1 to 2 days during your fertile window, rather than only on ovulation day.
  • Watch for signs of ovulation: clear, stretchy discharge like raw egg white, a mild ache on one side of the lower tummy, or a positive ovulation (LH) test kit.
  • Start folic acid now. Take 400 micrograms (0.4 mg) a day from at least a month before you conceive, unless your doctor advises a different dose.
  • Keep a healthy weight, eat a balanced diet and stay active. Being very underweight or overweight can upset ovulation.
  • Stop smoking, tobacco and alcohol, and keep caffeine to about 2 cups of coffee a day. This applies to your partner too.
  • Have a pre-pregnancy check-up for thyroid, haemoglobin, blood sugar, rubella immunity and thalassaemia carrier status.

When to see a doctor

See a gynaecologist if you have been trying for a year without success, or for 6 months if you are 35 or older. Get checked sooner if:

  • your cycles are shorter than 21 days, longer than 35 days, or very irregular
  • your periods have stopped, or are very heavy or painful
  • you have PCOS, endometriosis, a thyroid problem or a past pelvic infection
  • you have had two or more miscarriages
  • your partner has a known health or fertility concern
*This calculator gives an estimate based on your dates. Ovulation can shift from cycle to cycle, so your fertile days may differ. It is not a method of contraception and does not replace medical advice.
