What is Antenatal care?
Antenatal care is the series of supervision and care you receive on the eve of your pregnancy. It is alternatively called pregnancy care or maternity care. The care and supervision on the eve of your pregnancy are delivered under the close supervision of an experienced gynaecologist, often in the presence of a midwife.
The Elements of Antenatal Care
Antenatal care is administered to ensure the best possible outcome from your pregnancy. During the various steps of antenatal care, your healthcare provider will
- Ensure both you and your baby are healthy.
- Provide you with guidelines and information to eliminate as many risk factors as possible.
- Discuss your preferences for care before, during and after the pregnancy.
- Recommend you undergo two pregnancy ultrasound scans at 8 to 14 weeks and 18-21 weeks.
- Conduct antenatal screening tests to determine if your baby has genetic conditions like Down’s syndrome.
- Conduct blood tests to check for syphilis, HIV and hepatitis B.
- Conduct additional screenings for sickle cells and thalassaemia.

How Many Antenatal Appointments Do You Need?
If it is your first time expecting a child, at least ten antenatal appointments are recommended prior to your delivery. However, if you have been pregnant before, seven appointments will suffice.
Sometimes, you might require more appointments than the recommended number if you develop a medical condition or if you are dealing with a high-risk pregnancy.
